The Second Clove Seed Harvest is here ...

As I mentioned a few months ago, there is a second clove seed harvest this (plant) year. It is here now. Once I get myself a bit more organized I will start on the backorders from Europe. For the US I have some in my Etsy and Artfire shops as well as in Ebay auctions and soon to come on Zibbet.

I frequently get asked by people in other countries whether I can ship to them. For some that's easy, for some it's possible and for some the cost makes it prohibitive, e.g. Australia requires an import permit on the side of the buyer which costs hundred os dollars and takes months to obtain. Several countries require phytosanitary certificates which I can get but also at a cost that makes all but large orders cost prohibitive.

Happy New Year from Hilobeads!

A bit late, but better late than never I guess.

Some good news and some bad news: I just renewed the hilobeads.com domain for another 3 years - we're coming up on the 4 year anniversary. I haven't made up my mind yet whether to have a sale of any sort, and where, if.
I have new fresh water pearls but no pictures taken yet.
The bad news: I have to increase the price on drilled mgambo seeds, on Etsy only so far but that's because that's all I got around to yet. I may also have to increase the price on Job's Tears but that depends on how this year's harvest comes out. I sold close to 30 lbs last year and pretty much ran out.

In the ambivalent news (I have those too): the lilikoi picking season for production is over. I like the income but I need the time to pick Job's Tears now.
Clove seeds are again coming in (second harvest, for the first time). Picking 200 per day doesn't get all of them. I have some international orders still waiting but currently my day job takes all the energy I have.

And, having sold some jewelry again got me motivated to make some more (but again no pictures yet).

Update on clove seeds

Apparently there are going to be 2 clove and clove seeds harvests from our tree this year. Unfortunately I'm currently in the slump between them as the seeds are concerned. That's still a lot more clove seeds than the rest of the year but nowhere near like during the harvest time. I am still able to do a small order or so per week but for the larger ones it's going to be a while, sorry.

Clove seeds, clove seedlings and cloves

Those of you who follow my blog know that we have a clove tree. Unlike most years, it didn't bloom last year, but this year it started in January. After a while the clove buds look like this:

To illustrate the difference between cloves and clove seeds, in the top row on the left there are clove buds, on the right there are dried clove buds, which is what you get when you buy spice cloves

In the second row, on the left there are clove fruit (with pollinated seeds) and on the right clove seeds.

Clove seeds cannot be dried and be viable. A clove seed that turns brown is most likely dead (sorry to say).

Clove seedlings look like this after a while:

It is generally not a good idea to have more than one seedling in one planter because clove trees/seedlings positively hate to have their rootballs disturbed.

OK, clove plants are finicky, they really are. People have told me that it is close to impossible to transplant ohias. I got pretty good at that. Transplanting clove seedlings is yet a different level. But, if you put each seed into its own planter and transplant before they get root bound (and get the whole root ball out in one piece) you're pretty much home free.

Currently I have clove seeds available in my Etsy and Artfire shops and I have some seedlings available locally but I can't ship the seedlings (anywhere, including inter-island)

I hope to have cloves available to ship soon but I don't know yet to where I can do that without major paperwork.

My visit to the Brookhaven glass lab (last October)

Last October I went to a Software (EPICS) meeting at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (Long Island, NY), so this post is long overdue. While there, I had the opportunity, somebody on Lampwork Etc. gave me a tip, to visit the glass lab, and its 'owner' Barry Lafler.
This is bit of an overview, a lit torch, and a lot of glass on the bench:
