RIP Richard Crowe

Professor Richard Crowe of the UHH Physics and Astronomy Department was fatally injured in Arizona this past weekend. You may have read about it in the paper if you are local to here or to the accident. Richard wasn't a close friend but he was a friend alright. Our daughter and the older of his two have been friends since preschool. Not always close, but as our daughter put it to me today "if I don't see her ever again so be it, but I want her to always be happy" (names intentionally omitted). This is how I feel too, about all of the Crowe family. Richard was fatally injured in a horrible accident in Arizona in tour of the Canyon de Chelly. Another person/couple who were on this same tour is/are writing a blog and is/are doing a very good job of it. There are a few pictures - no blood - and a very good description of what happened. You can find the first of the articles about this horrible accident here: https://otrwjam.wordpress.com/2012/05/29/the-accident-at-canyon-de-chelly/ My condolences to the family.

Happy New Year from Hilobeads!

A bit late, but better late than never I guess.

Some good news and some bad news: I just renewed the hilobeads.com domain for another 3 years - we're coming up on the 4 year anniversary. I haven't made up my mind yet whether to have a sale of any sort, and where, if.
I have new fresh water pearls but no pictures taken yet.
The bad news: I have to increase the price on drilled mgambo seeds, on Etsy only so far but that's because that's all I got around to yet. I may also have to increase the price on Job's Tears but that depends on how this year's harvest comes out. I sold close to 30 lbs last year and pretty much ran out.

In the ambivalent news (I have those too): the lilikoi picking season for production is over. I like the income but I need the time to pick Job's Tears now.
Clove seeds are again coming in (second harvest, for the first time). Picking 200 per day doesn't get all of them. I have some international orders still waiting but currently my day job takes all the energy I have.

And, having sold some jewelry again got me motivated to make some more (but again no pictures yet).

So that this post isn't completely without pictures, an Etsy treasury curated by redemptionart from Team Hilo Etsy:

A fun Etsy Meetup in Hilo - and a resulting treasury by Cheryl

Yesterday was Kamehameha Day, otherwise I probably wouldn't have made it. Etsy announced that this was the Etsy Craft Party 2011 day, and thanks to Tanya and Connie it took shape. We met in Downtown Hilo at Broke Da Mouth. Yummy coffee and I later had an ahi salad on greens which was also very good. Several people had baked stuffs which also looked very good but I had breakfast before I went. I think most of us had never met in real life before, I only knew Tanya in real life and PK by a bit of on-line communications. We're a rather diverse bunch from vintage through fabric artists and jewelry makers to a candle maker, Cheryl, who put together a treasury that illustrates the large variety:

'Hilo Etsy on the Big Island of Hawaii' by doublebrush

A diverse, creative, and down right nice group of crafters met on June 11, 2011 for the first ever Hilo Etsy meetup! Anyone who lives on the east side of the Big Island is welcome to join us next time. Etsy is alive and well in Hilo!
